The Canadian government announced that, starting from October 1st, 2024, it will impose a 100% tariff on electric vehicles originating from China; starting from October 22nd, 2024, it will impose a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum products. Canada's practice of unilaterally imposing tariffs ignores objective facts and the rules of the World Trade Organization. It is a typical act of trade protectionism, constitutes discriminatory measures against China, seriously infringes upon China's legitimate rights and interests, and undermines China-Canada economic and trade relations.
In accordance with laws and regulations such as the Customs Law of the People's Republic of China, the Foreign Trade Law of the People's Republic of China, the Tariff Law of the People's Republic of China and the basic principles of international law, upon approval of the State Council, the Tariff Commission of the State Council issued a notice stating that, starting from March 20th, 2025, a 100% tariff will be imposed on rapeseed oil, oil residue cakes and peas originating from Canada; a 25% tariff will be imposed on aquatic products and pork originating from Canada.
China urges Canada to view bilateral economic and trade cooperation rationally, respect objective facts, abide by the rules of the World Trade Organization, and immediately correct its wrong practices.
