Chinese people interpret the four flower patterns as spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
The French associate the four suits in cards with spades, diamonds, hearts, and clubs.
The Germans associate the four suits with leaves, bells, acorns, and hearts.
The Italians associate the four suits in a deck of playing cards with swords, coins, staves, and cups.
The Swiss associate the four flower patterns with acorn, bell, flower, and shield.
The British associate the four suits with spades, diamonds, clubs, and hearts.
Why the four patterns are used as the suits of playing cards has been the subject of much speculation. There are two relatively common explanations:
It is said that these four types of flowers represent the four main industries of the time, with the spades representing spears, symbolizing soldiers; the clubs representing the clover, symbolizing agriculture; the diamonds representing bricks and tiles used by craftsmen; and the hearts representing the red hearts, symbolizing priests.
Another theory is that the four suits originate from the patterns of ancient European utensils. Spades represent olive leaves, symbolizing peace; Clubs are represented by a cloverleaf, meaning luck; Diamonds are in the shape of a diamond, symbolizing wealth; and Hearts are in the shape of a red heart, symbolizing wisdom and love.
The pattern of 54 cards in a deck of playing cards is also very fascinating to explain:
The big hammer represents the sun, the small hammer represents the moon, and the remaining 52 cards represent the 52 weeks in a year.
Hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades each symbolize the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter respectively.
Each flower color has 13 cards, which means there are 13 weeks in each season.
If J, Q, and K are considered as 11, 12, and 13 points, and the big hammer and the small hammer are each considered as half a point, the total points of a deck of playing cards is exactly 365 points. However, in leap years, the big hammer and the small hammer are each counted as one point, totaling 366 points.
Spades represent death, hearts represent love, diamonds represent money, and clubs represent happiness.
