The pipa is a traditional East Asian plucked instrument with a history of over two thousand years. The instrument, which was originally known as the "pipa," appeared around the Qin Dynasty in China. The word "pipa" contains the character "jue," which means "two jade stones colliding to produce a pleasant sound," indicating that this is an instrument that produces sound by plucking the strings. The character "bi" refers to the strings being arranged in a row, and the character "ba" indicates that the instrument is always attached to the performer, unlike the lute, which does not touch the body. Prior to the Tang Dynasty, the pipa was also the general term for all lute-family plucked instruments (also known as the lute family) in Chinese. The Chinese pipa was also introduced to other regions of East Asia, developing into the present-day Japanese pipa, Korean pipa, and Vietnamese pipa.
