What is early pregnancy:
Early pregnancy refers to the first three months after conception (i.e., within 12 weeks), also known as early gestation. This period is when the embryo is forming, so it can also be called the embryonic stage.
What is early pregnancy?
After the female egg and sperm combine, pregnancy actually begins, but it is generally difficult to detect within 2 weeks after conception. This early stage is what we call early pregnancy (i.e., within 6 weeks).
Fertilization:
The combination of sperm and egg is called conception or fertilization.
Fertilization process: During intercourse, the male ejaculates semen into the female vagina. Sperm swim towards the uterus via their tails before entering the fallopian tubes. Each ejaculation contains hundreds of millions of sperm, but most lose their vitality or die due to the acidic environment of the vagina. Only a very small number of sperm can overcome the obstacles and reach the fallopian tubes. It takes as little as a few minutes, or typically 1–1.5 hours, for sperm from the vagina to reach the fallopian tubes. These sperm lose their fertility after just 3 days upon reaching the fallopian tubes.
During the reproductive age, women have one mature egg released by their ovaries each month. After the egg is released, it is captured by the fimbriae of the fallopian tube and enters the tube. Within 24 hours after the egg is released, if it encounters sperm in the fallopian tube, the egg will be surrounded by multiple sperm, and only one sperm can penetrate the egg for fertilization. The fertilized egg is called a zygote. The zygote develops in the fallopian tube while gradually moving toward the uterine cavity. Approximately 7–8 days after fertilization, it reaches the uterine cavity. After floating in the uterus for 3–4 days, if the conditions are suitable, it can implant on the endometrium. Implantation of the zygote is the official sign of pregnancy!
【Regarding HCG】
After the fertilized egg implants, the outer trophoblast cells produce a proteinase that dissolves the endometrium it touches. The embryo then penetrates into the functional layer of the endometrium. At this point, syncytiotrophoblasts develop and extend many cell projections, forming a uniform villous structure known as villi. The hormone—human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)—which begins to be secreted only at this stage—would not be produced without the implantation of the fertilized egg. It takes 7–8 days for the egg to travel from the fallopian tube to the uterus, and 3–4 days to stay in the uterine cavity. The total process requires 10–12 days. Therefore, it is very normal and reasonable to detect HCG using a high-sensitivity early pregnancy test kit with 25 international units around 14 days after intercourse.
【What could cause a weakly positive test result?】
1. If a healthy woman has had recent sexual intercourse, then a weakly positive result on a pregnancy test strip indicates a possible pregnancy.
2. If the early pregnancy test strip is stored for too long (more than 1 year) or not properly preserved (e.g., due to moisture), and it is not stored at normal room temperature, it may become ineffective, leading to false negative results.
3. Before the normal period starts or when menstruation is delayed without pregnancy, the test strip result may be weakly positive.
4. If pregnancy has just begun, or there is a possibility of ectopic pregnancy, the HCG level in the body is generally low, resulting in a weak positive test result.
5. After 10 weeks of pregnancy, the HCG level reaches its peak, or it begins to decrease. Therefore, early pregnancy test strips may sometimes produce false negatives or weak positives.
6. Some tumor cells, such as hydatidiform mole, choriocarcinoma, bronchial cancer, and kidney cancer, can also secrete HCG. We have also encountered cases where patients with endometrial hyperplasia showed positive HCG tests.
7. If women of childbearing age experience amenorrhea or have doubts about pregnancy, do not rely solely on a home pregnancy test to determine if they are pregnant. For added safety, it is advisable to take another test after 3 days. Of course, the most reliable approach is to seek a comprehensive medical examination at a hospital promptly, especially for those with a weakly positive result, so that appropriate measures can be taken early.
Instructions for Using Early Pregnancy Test Strips
【Common Name]Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Diagnostic Reagent (Colloidal Gold Method)
The main components consist of a human chorionic gonadotropin diagnostic test strip (colloidal gold method), test strips, and drying agents. The minimum detectable amount is for HCG samples at 25 mIU/ml.
【Working Principle】
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein produced by the placenta. Due to its small molecular weight, it can be excreted in urine through the glomeruli, making the measurement of hCG in urine a reliable indicator for diagnosing pregnancy. The pregnant woman diagnostic test strip uses monoclonal colloidal gold technology to detect hCG in urine 7–10 days after pregnancy (pregnancy refers to when the fertilized egg implants in the uterine cavity) to determine whether pregnancy has occurred.
【Indications】Suitable for early pregnancy detection in women of childbearing age.
【Testing Time】
1. It is recommended to choose 6 to 7 days after the menstrual period ends.
2. A blood HCG test can detect pregnancy on day 9 after fertilization and ovulation, while a urine early pregnancy test can be performed on day 14. (Fertilization typically occurs 2–3 days after a positive result on an ovulation test)
【Usage Instructions】
1. When using it, tear the packaging aluminum foil bag along the notch to remove the pregnancy test stick;
2. Put on the disposable plastic film gloves provided in the box, tightly grip one end of the pregnancy test stick with your thumb, tilt one end of the urine absorption hole downward, and ensure that the side where you observe the test stick is downward, with the plum blossom pattern facing upward.
3. Urinate into the urine suction hole on the side of the pregnancy test stick. Have the urine pass through the hole and maintain a urine collection time of 1 to 2 seconds (please note that urine should not wet the observation window during collection! Otherwise, the pregnancy test stick will become ineffective). Then read the result within 5 minutes;
【Result Determination:】
1. Negative: Only a control line appears, indicating no pregnancy;
2. Weak positive: both the control line and the test line show color, but the test line shows less color than the control line. This indicates possible pregnancy. Please retest with morning urine the next day;
3. Male: Both the control line and the test line show color; the test line has distinct, clear color that matches the control line, indicating pregnancy;
4. Strong positive: Both the control line and the test line show color, but the test line shows more color than the control line, indicating pregnancy for some time.
5. Invalid: No color lines are observed, indicating the test failed or was unsuccessful.
【Notes:】
1. This product is for single-use only. When testing, the test card can be taken immediately; once the cover is torn off, it cannot be stored.
2. The observation results will be invalid after 10 minutes.
3. After opening the aluminum foil bag, do not leave the test strip exposed to air for too long to prevent it from getting damp.
4. The assessment result for this product is for reference only; the final outcome should be based on the hospital diagnosis.
5. When the HCG concentration is very high, the test line color may become lighter; this is a normal phenomenon.
6. If the test subject suspects possible pregnancy and the urine test is negative, fresh urine can be collected again after 48–72 hours for another determination.
7. Uterine tumors, hydatidiform mole, or menopausal patients may produce positive results due to high HCG levels in urine.
8. In cases of suspected uterine displacement or abnormal pregnancy, diagnosis should be made using a combination of other methods.
9. Endometrial hyperplasia, choriocarcinoma, gastric cancer patients, uterine tumors, hydatidiform mole, and menopausal patients may produce positive results due to high HCG levels in their urine.
