Thermometers are also known as "medical thermometers". The medium used in thermometers is mercury. The volume of the liquid bulb is much larger than that of the upper tube. As the mercury in the bulb undergoes slight changes due to body temperature, its expansion causes a significant change in the length of the mercury column within the tube. Body temperature variations typically range from 35°C to 42°C, so the scales on thermometers usually cover 35°C to 42°C, with each degree divided into 10 divisions. Therefore, thermometers can be precise to 1/10 of a degree. The neck near the liquid bulb at the lower part of the thermometer is a very narrow curved section. When measuring body temperature, the mercury in the bulb expands when heated, allowing the mercury to rise from the neck to a certain position within the tube. When thermal equilibrium is reached with the body temperature, the mercury column remains constant. After the thermometer is removed from the body, if the external temperature is lower, the mercury contracts due to cold, causing it to break off at the narrow curved section, preventing the part that has risen into the tube from returning, while still maintaining the height of the mercury column at the level it had when in contact with the body.
Temperature range: 35-42 degrees Celsius.
Body temperature refers to the internal temperature of the body. For healthy individuals, the temperature at the armpit is between 30 and 37 degrees Celsius. Oral temperature is 0.2 to 0.4 degrees higher than that at the armpit, while rectal temperature is 0.3 to 0.5 degrees higher than oral temperature. The body temperature remains relatively constant; normal people may experience slight fluctuations within 24 hours, with differences generally not exceeding 1 degree. Under physiological conditions, body temperature is slightly lower in the morning and slightly higher in the afternoon. It may be slightly higher after exercise, eating, before menstruation or pregnancy, and lower in the elderly. A body temperature above normal is called fever. 37.5–38 degrees Celsius is low-grade fever, 38–39 degrees Celsius is moderate fever, 39–40 degrees Celsius is high fever, and above 40 degrees Celsius is hyperpyrexia. The relative constancy of body temperature is one of the important conditions for maintaining normal bodily functions. If the temperature exceeds 41 degrees Celsius or falls below 25 degrees Celsius, it can severely affect the function of various systems, especially the nervous system, and even endanger life. The heat production and heat dissipation in the body are regulated by the central nervous system. Many diseases can impair the normal regulatory function of body temperature, leading to changes in temperature. Clinically, measuring body temperature in patients and observing its changes is important for diagnosing diseases or assessing the prognosis of certain conditions.
