The principle of a thermal transfer printer is that a transparent film is applied over a light-colored material (typically paper), which turns dark after being heated for a while (usually black, but also blue). The image is created by applying heat to the film.
Heat is generated in the membrane through chemical reactions. These reactions occur under certain temperatures. High temperatures accelerate these chemical reactions. When the temperature is below 60 degrees Celsius, the membrane requires a considerable amount of time.
Long, even over several years, to become dark; and when the temperature is 200°C, this reaction is completed in several microseconds.
A thermal printer selectively heats a specific area on the thermal paper to create the corresponding image. The heating is provided by a small electronic heater on the printing head that comes into contact with the thermal material.
Heaters arranged in a square dot or strip pattern are logically controlled by the printer, and when driven, they generate a graphic corresponding to the heating element on the thermal paper. The same logical electrical control that controls the heating elements
The printer also controls the feed of the paper, enabling it to print graphics across the entire label or sheet of paper.
The most common thermal printer uses a fixed print head with a hot point array, which has 320 square dots, each measuring 0.25mm x 0.25mm. By utilizing this dot matrix, the printer can print characters by heating the dots to raise them above the paper surface.
Printing is done on the hot-sensitive paper at any desired location. This technology has been used in both paper and label printers.
