The main function of clapperboard is to be used as a mark for shooting each piece of film, which is convenient for identification during later editing.

As we know, movies are made up of many scenes. Each movie usually has hundreds or even thousands of scenes, and the scenes and contents in the movie are very complicated. Filmmakers have found a good way in their long-term practice. They use a small board with black and white stripes. The board briefly reads the relevant content of the film to be shot below, before shooting each shot, take this "board" as the mark of this shot. This step is called "clapper" or "clapper" in the jargon of the film industry ". In this way, there is clapperboard lens at the beginning of each film. In post-production, as long as the staff sees this mark, they will know which film, the first few plays, the first few shots, very good recognition. In addition, other staff such as clothing, makeup, props and so on can also avoid the flaws in the details of the shot at different times, thus avoiding mistakes.

Since clapperboard is used to mark, why do you need to knock it? This is because movies not only have images, but also sound. If the voice and mouth of the characters in a movie are inconsistent when speaking, they will feel very uncomfortable when watching the movie. When shooting a movie, The Field record "snapped" the wooden strips on the board while lifting the clapperboard, making a crisp sound. The photographer shot the percussion sound and the scene of the field record at the same time, this voice becomes the synchronization mark of later recording, which can enable editors to determine accurate audio-visual positioning.

Because clapperboard is closely related to film work, it has been regarded as the mark and symbol of film career for a long time. The Chinese film museum, built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Chinese films, is shaped like a huge clapperboard. In 1996, France issued a commemorative stamp (attached picture) for the 50th Anniversary of Cannes International Film Festival. There was this clapperboard on the stamp.
