How to choose and use scissors correctly?
As people's living standards improve, the requirements for dress and appearance also increase. Therefore, the number of clothing enthusiasts is increasing. For beginners in clothing, the first problem they encounter is how to choose, maintain, and correctly use scissors.
1. The method of selecting scissors
To ensure accurate cutting of two or more layers of fabric, one should choose a special pair of scissors. The most commonly used length is 24-28 centimeters, which is marked as No. 9, No. 10, No. 11, and No. 12. The key to identifying the quality of scissors is to focus on the cutting edge of the fabric. First, check that both blades are sharp, with the upper blade in a straight line and the lower blade slightly curved, and that the ends of both blades are level. Secondly, check if both blades are of equal width and thickness, and that the handle feels good in the hand, not abrasive, uncomfortable, or awkward. Scissors that meet these conditions are relatively ideal.
In addition, small scissors are also known as yarn scissors and are essential. They are mainly used for cutting threads or thread ends when sewing by hand or machine, and are also convenient for making cut-outs in certain areas. Choose small scissors with correct blade engagement and good elasticity.
2. Maintenance of Scissors
In order to maintain the sharpness of scissors and extend their service life, special scissors should be used only for cutting fabric and interlining, and not for paper cutting or other purposes, as this can easily damage the blade. After using the scissors, it is necessary to wipe the blade with a cloth dipped in sewing machine oil to prevent rusting and affect the use. Scissors should be properly stored, and should not be knocked or dropped on the ground at will.
3. The Techniques of Using Scissors
To properly maintain and skillfully use scissors, one can keep them sharp for a longer period of time. After laying the fabric on the cutting table, press it lightly with your left hand, and hold the scissor handle correctly with your right hand. The front of the shears should be close to the cutting table, with the handle slightly raised. When cutting straight lines, use the middle part of the blade. Additionally, when cutting sharp corners or turning areas, use the tip of the blade. Always remember not to lift the scissors during the cutting process, or the edges of the two layers or more will shift, causing errors in the cutting process. Furthermore, do not hold the scissors in your hand to cut empty or tilt to the left or right, to avoid direct friction or biting of the blade.
