The 37-tone Yunluo is composed of several different small gongs, with a luxurious and clear sound.
Copper, frame, two sections of iron square tubes for disassembly and assembly.
The gong used currently can simply be divided into four categories: the large gong, the small gong, the palm gong, and the cloud gong. The large gong has a relatively large surface, usually about one foot in diameter. The gong edge is drilled and tied with a rope, and it is held up or hung on a frame with the left hand, while the right hand strikes it with a soft mallet wrapped in cloth. There are many types of large gong, and the forms popular in different regions are not entirely the same, such as the double-gloss gong, the gloss gong, the tiger sound gong, the central hall gong, the visit Su gong, the serving gong, the large sieve gong, the copying gong, the deep wave, and the mahjong gong, etc. The sound of the large gong is loud and rough, and it can be used to color the atmosphere of the music and enhance the rhythm. It is often used in instrumental ensemble or accompaniment of opera, but due to its long echo, it is not suitable for playing dense musical patterns.
The xiao luo (small gong) has a high or relatively high pitch, with a slanted surface measuring about six and a half inches in diameter. In the center of the gong is a small flat area known as the 'heart.' The xiao luo comes in three sizes, each with a high, medium, or low pitch. It has no holes in the edge and is not tied with a rope. To play the xiao luo, one uses the knuckle of the index finger of the left hand to lift the inner edge of the gong, and the right hand holds the gong board to strike it. This is commonly known as the 'hand gong' and is referred to as the 'tanging gong' in folk music. In Peking opera, the performer is known as the 'Beijing xiao luo.' Although the names are different, the playing techniques are the same, with only differences in size and weight. Due to the different regions and occasions of application, a variety of gongs have been formed, with an estimated 30 different types. Some are as small as a few centimeters in diameter, while others can reach over one meter. Their shapes, tones, and effects are also different.
