During the National Day holiday, Yiwu, the shopping mall, was even busier amidst the festive atmosphere.
Businessmen of different skin colors and speaking different languages took advantage of the seasonal product changes by many merchants to come to Yiwu International Trade Mart to place orders and replenish their stocks. In the first six days of the National Day holiday, the "Supermarket of the World" welcomed over 1.27 million visitors, an increase of 29% compared to the same period last year.
"As long as the railway freight service is operating, we won't take a holiday," said Bi Xunu, a Nepalese businessman. He selected a batch of tourist souvenirs and sent them to Nepal via the newly opened international freight public-railway intermodal transportation service to South Asia (Yiwu-Xigaze-Kathmandu). Having been in business in Yiwu for over 20 years, Bi Xunu's company is experiencing its best year in terms of trade volume. "Last year, we did business with 300 containers, and this year we expect it to reach 500," he said.
A set of market data records the changes in Yiwu: in 2023, its export sales exceeded 500 billion yuan; it houses over 2.1 million types of commodities across 26 major categories, connecting 32 million workers and 2.1 million enterprises; it has trade relations with more than 200 countries and regions, attracting 15,000 foreign merchants to reside permanently and more than 8,000 foreign-invested entities. This year, the total number of market operators in Yiwu exceeded 1.1 million, ranking first among all counties in China. In the first eight months, Yiwu's total import and export value reached 444.06 billion yuan, up 17.2% year-on-year.
