On May 31st, the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, war drums boomed and roars echoed across the Dachen River in Yiwu. Thirty-three Chinese and foreign dragon boat teams surged forward on the waves, unstoppable in their momentum, as the oarsmen followed the rhythmic beats of the drums, their oars slicing through the water with lightning speed. Over 100,000 spectators lining the riverbanks erupted in continuous screams, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.
It is said that the history of dragon boat racing in Dachen Town, Yiwu, can be traced back as far as the Han Dynasty. Today, it stands as the dragon boat racing event in Yiwu with the most participating teams, the largest scale, and the greatest influence. Every year, the Dachen Dragon Boat Race attracts dragon boat teams from far and wide to sign up and compete, and this year was no exception.
This year, there were 15 teams in the men's group, 7 in the women's group, 4 in the amateur group, and 7 in the international group, totaling over 500 athletes across the four categories. Among them, the competitors from the 7 international dragon boat teams hailed from 16 countries, including Brazil, Yemen, Russia, and so on.
A dragon boat race tests the coordination among three key roles: whether the drummer can fully mobilize the potential of the rowers, whether the steersman can steer the correct course and find the most efficient route, and whether the rowers can synchronize as one, paddling with all their might in unison until they reach the finish line.
