Buckyball (Buckminsterfullerene)
A natural molecule composed of carbon atoms, also known as carbon-60. Its molecular structure is similar to the dome designed by Buckminster Fuller, hence its name. It is commonly known as fullerene on the mainland.
Chemically, C60 has a sp2 hybridized orbital similar to graphite, where each carbon atom is bonded to only three adjacent carbon atoms, forming three δ bonds and one π bond.
The carbon-carbon bonds have two lengths, 1.38 Å and 1.45 Å. The shorter carbon-carbon bonds shared by two adjacent hexagons (as shown by the yellow bonds in the figure) are similar to double bonds (C=C), consisting of a δ-bond and a π-bond. The longer carbon-carbon bonds shared by a hexagon and a pentagon (as shown by the red bonds in the figure) are similar to single bonds (C-C).
The chemical properties of C60 are quite stable, and it will not break even when it is hit at a speed of 24,000 kilometers per hour. If the crystal is heated to 550°C in nitrogen, it will sublimate. It appears in a purple-red solid molecular crystal at room temperature. It is as non-conductive as diamond, but it has superconductivity at 18K. Research shows that it conducts electricity by holes in the lattice (similar to p-type semiconductors). If other molecules (such as tri-bromomethane) are added to lengthen the lattice spacing, it can effectively increase its superconducting phase transition temperature to 117K.
