The origin of napkins has a long history, dating back to ancient times. In England during the 15th–16th centuries, since shaving knives had not yet been invented, men wore thick beards. Without such tools, men had to eat meat by hand, which easily left their beards greasy. They had no other choice but to wipe them with their clothes. Housewives, noticing this unhygienic and impolite behavior, came up with an idea—hang a cloth around men’s necks. This was the first napkin. As these large napkins became too cumbersome to use, a tailor in London devised a new solution: cutting the napkins into small squares for easier use, which eventually led to the napkins used at banquets today.

In ancient China, there were also primitive napkins. According to the "Rites of Zhou. Heavenly Officials. Pi Ren," Pi Ren was responsible for "managing the napkins used for covering food." In "Rites of Zhou. Heavenly Officials. King’s Minister," it is further stated that Pi Ren was an official in charge of daily royal napkin supplies. At that time, one Pi Ren managed over 30 people, including 1 "yan" (male slave in temporary palaces), 10 "nuo pi" (female slaves who handled napkins), and 20 "xi" (slaves from the Xi tribe). They were all tasked with protecting food and serving napkins in the palace. This shows that over two thousand years ago, China already used towels to cover food—these towels can be considered the world’s oldest napkins. During the Qing Dynasty, the emperor used a napkin called “huai luan” when eating. This napkin, decorated with patterns symbolizing good fortune and prosperity, was embroidered on bright yellow silk—the color used by the emperor. One corner of the napkin also had a clasp, allowing it to be fastened onto clothing buttons during meals. This Chinese-style napkin was much more luxurious than ordinary Western napkins and also easier to use.

In modern European and American countries, colored napkins remain an essential part of daily life and symbolize taste.<t_XXXXXXXX>divided.
