According to Professor Xu Guozhi, a member of the Standing Committee of the National Technical Committee on Standardization of Biobased Materials and Degradable Products, and a professor at Beijing Technology and Business University, the main types of biobased plastics that have been industrialized or are in the process of industrialization include polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polycaprolactone, polyethylene terephthalate, polybutylene succinate, copolymers of terephthalic acid, butanediol, and adipic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyethylene glycol. Currently, the main applications of biobased plastics in China are in the fields of shopping bags, fresh product packaging, and agricultural film.
The secretary-general of the Degradable Plastic Professional Committee of the China Plastics Industry Association, Weng Yunxuan, pointed out that China began researching and developing biodegradable plastics in the mid-1990s. During the Beijing Olympics, biodegradable plastic products (except nonwoven products, nonwoven bags, and dot-plastic cloth) were widely used. It is expected that by 2010, China's total production capacity of biodegradable plastics will reach about 250,000 tons.
Nonwoven products are directly formed from high-polymer slices, short fibers, or long fibers through various fiber-web forming methods and solidification technologies to create a new type of fiber product with soft, breathable, and flat structures. They have characteristics such as a short process flow, high output, low cost, rapid variety changes, and a wide range of raw material sources. Nonwovens can be divided into different production processes:
Water-jet nonwoven fabric: It is to spray a high-pressure micro-fine water jet onto a layer or multiple layers of fiber mesh, so that the fibers interlace together, thereby strengthening the fiber mesh to a certain strength. Hot-melt nonwoven fabric: It refers to the addition of fiber-like or powder-like hot-melt bonding reinforcing materials to the fiber mesh, and then the fiber mesh is reinforced into a fabric by melting, cooling, and strengthening. Pulp airflow nonwoven fabric: Also known as dust-free paper or dry-process papermaking nonwoven fabric. It uses airflow technology to open the wood pulp fiberboard into a single fiber state, and then uses airflow to cause the fibers to aggregate on the mesh screen, and then the fiber mesh is reinforced into a fabric. Wet-process nonwoven fabric: It is to open the fiber raw material in a water medium into single fibers, at the same time mixing different fiber raw materials, making a fiber suspension slurry, and then delivering the suspension slurry to the mesh formation mechanism, allowing the fibers to form a mesh under wet conditions and then reinforce into a fabric. Spinning and adhering nonwoven fabric: After the polymer has been extruded and stretched to form a continuous filament, the filament is laid out into a mesh, and then the fiber mesh is reinforced into a nonwoven fabric by itself, hot bonding, chemical bonding, or mechanical reinforcement methods. Spunbond nonwoven fabric: The process of the polymer feed: the polymer is fed into the extruder, and then the polymer is extruded through a die or orifice to form a molten polymer strip. The molten polymer strip is then drawn and stretched through a series of sets of rollers to form a continuous filament. The continuous filament is then laid out into a mesh, and then the fiber mesh is reinforced into a nonwoven fabric by itself, hot bonding, chemical bonding, or mechanical reinforcement methods.
