Polyester is an important type of synthetic fiber, which is the commercial name of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber in China. It is produced from pure terephthalic acid (PTA) or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and ethylene glycol (EG) through esterification or ester exchange and condensation reactions to form a high-molecular-weight polymer. This polymer is then spun into fibers and subjected to further processing to create the fiber.
Its features include:
1）Polyester fabric has high strength and elastic recovery ability, durable and resistant to creasing. Its elasticity is similar to wool, and when stretched by 5% to 6%, it can almost completely recover. Its crease resistance exceeds that of other fibers, meaning that the fabric does not crease, and it has good size stability.
2) Polyester fabric has good resistance to various chemicals. It is not easily damaged by acids and alkalis, and is also resistant to mold and insect damage. Additionally, it has strong resistance to ultraviolet rays.
3) Polyester fabrics have good light resistance, except that they are slightly worse than acrylic fibers. Their ability to resist sunlight is superior to that of natural fiber fabrics. Especially, their resistance to sunlight behind glass is very good.
4) The wear resistance of polyester fabrics ranks second only to that of the best-wear-resistant nylon, and is better than that of other natural fibers and synthetic fibers.
5) Good color fastness, not easily fading.
6) Polyester fabrics have poor resistance to melting, and they are prone to form holes when exposed to smoke, ash, or sparks.
