The meaning of the Lotus Lantern
The lotus has four virtues: one is fragrance, the second is purity, the third is softness, and the fourth is lovability. Therefore, the lotus has assumed the symbolic mission of Buddhism. The 'Sutra of Forty-two Chapters' says: 'I am a monk in the muddy world; I should be like a lotus, not polluted.' Therefore, the Savior of the world, the Brahma King, was born sitting on a thousand-leaf golden precious lotus. The Buddha, the Buddha of the past, present, and future, and the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara are all seated on lotus flowers or hold lotus flowers in their hands, indicating that the Buddha is from the world yet is clean and uncontaminated. For the Buddhist sect, the lotus is a very noble and sacred object.
Lighting candles or oil lamps was common in the past, but now it's replaced by electric lotus lamps. Lamps represent wisdom, driving away darkness and illuminating life. The deeper meaning is that they symbolize burning oneself to illuminate others. When we offer lamps before the Buddha, we should understand this meaning. In society, we should put others first, which is the essence of offering lamps. Candles burn themselves to illuminate others, and this is the meaning that the Buddha is conveying. In society, we should sacrifice ourselves for the benefit of society and all beings, not for our own enjoyment, but for the sake of others. This is the essence of the teaching. All the offerings before the Buddha have profound teaching meanings and are symbolic, reminding ourselves.
