 The history of ashtrays: 

 Ashtrays are tools for holding ash and cigarette butts, and they were first produced in the late 19th century. After the introduction of cigarettes, throwing ash and cigarette butts around was unsanitary, and ashtrays were created accordingly.
Initially, the ashtray was referred to as the 'cigarette disc', commonly made of pottery or porcelain, but also available in glass or metal. Their shapes and sizes were not fixed, but they all had a distinct feature: a few grooves of the same diameter as a cigarette, which were specifically designed for holding cigarettes.
 Ashtrays, besides serving a practical function, are also works of art with certain aesthetic value.
