Screen printing belongs to letterpress printing. Together with flat printing, relief printing, and intaglio printing, it is known as one of the four major printing methods. Letterpress printing includes stencil printing, perforated plates, stencil printing, and screen printing. The principle of letterpress printing is as follows: during printing, a printing plate (such as a paper membrane plate or other plate bases) with holes allowing ink to pass is used. Under certain pressure, ink flows through the holes in the plate onto the substrate (paper, ceramics, etc.), forming images or text. Stencil printing is a simplified form of letterpress printing that originated at the end of the 19th century. This printing method involves creating a wax paper pattern using a typewriter or quill pen on special wax paper, then printing on the wax paper plate with an ink roller, resulting in ideal printing results on the substrate. Among letterpress printing methods, screen printing is widely used. Screen printing involves stretching silk fabric, synthetic fiber fabric, or metal mesh onto a frame, and producing the screen plate either by hand lacquering or photochemical plate-making techniques. Modern screen printing technology uses photosensitive materials and photolithography to create the screen plate (where the holes in the screen for the image area are open, while those in the non-image area are blocked). During printing, a squeegee presses the ink through the holes in the image area, transferring it onto the substrate to produce identical images as the original design. Screen printing equipment is simple, easy to operate, requires minimal setup and low costs, and has strong adaptability. Common printed materials produced by screen printing include: color oil paintings, posters, business cards, book covers, product labels, and printed textiles.
The thermal transfer printing process is also widely used in the gift industry, especially in the production of hangtags. This technique has low costs and excellent results. It offers price advantages when printing patterns, and since thermal transfer hangtags are environmentally friendly, they are highly favored by customers. Thermal transfer printing involves using thermal transfer ink to print images such as portraits, landscapes, and patterns onto color inkjet paper (or thermal sublimation-specific inkjet paper), or ordinary ink onto heat transfer paper. Then, through a heating device, the paper is heated to a certain temperature within a few minutes, allowing the patterns to be accurately transferred onto materials such as porcelain (porcelain cups, plates, tiles, panels, etc.), glass, metal, plastic, and cotton fabrics. In the production of thermal transfer hangtags, the base band is usually white, and both the background color and the text pattern on the entire rope are sublimated. This provides great convenience for designing the overall appearance of hangtags, as theoretically, hangtags can be made according to any color and pattern chosen by the customer. In contrast, traditional screen printing methods typically involve printing the customer’s pattern and logo onto colored fabric. Most gift manufacturers, due to cost constraints, can only produce solid-color fabrics, which becomes difficult to handle with multiple colors and results in higher production costs and misalignment. Thermal transfer, however, uses integrated pattern transfer, eliminating such issues.
