Based on this phenomenon, we can calculate the distance to the lightning by measuring the time from seeing the lightning to hearing the thunder. If the lightning is in the northwest, and thunder is heard 10 seconds later, it means that the thunderstorm is about 3,400 meters away from us.

During the discharge process, the high-temperature arc in the lightning channel can cause the surrounding air to expand rapidly, and then cool, causing the air to contract rapidly, causing violent acoustic vibration, which is the thunder we hear. When a charged thundercloud approaches a ground protrusion, an intense discharge will occur between them. At the location of the lightning discharge, there will be a strong flash and a loud explosion, which is the lightning and thunder that people see and hear.
