The rain gauge is a specialized device used to collect precipitation, designed to measure rainfall in millimeters. An instrument for measuring the total amount of liquid and solid precipitation over a certain period of time. It is typically a cylinder with a diameter of 20 centimeters; to maintain the shape and area of the cylinder opening, the material must be rigid. To prevent rainwater from spilling in, the cylinder opening is blade-shaped, straight on the inside and slanted on the outside. There are two types of rain gauges: those with a funnel and those without a funnel. A water reservoir is built into the cylinder. During the snowy season, the water reservoir is removed, and a cylinder without a funnel is used, allowing snowflakes to be directly stored at the bottom of the rain gauge.

Instrument for measuring rainfall. The direct observation period precipitation consists of components such as a rain collector, funnel, water storage bottle, and rainfall cup. The diameter of the rain collector is 20 centimeters. The mouth of the instrument is horizontal, typically 70 centimeters above the ground. The rainfall gauge is installed vertically and is used to measure daily precipitation, segmented precipitation within a day, and single precipitation events. The capacity of the water storage bottle and its structure must be reinforced accordingly to measure cumulative precipitation over a week and a month. If a larger storage container is used, it must meet specific structural requirements: a blade-shaped reinforcement ring with a straight inner edge and a slanted outer edge must be installed at the mouth of the rain collector, and the deviation of the rain collector area must not exceed 0.5%. The depth of the straight wall portion of the rain collector above the funnel and the curvature of the funnel slope must be arranged in such a way that raindrops do not fall onto or splash off the instrument wall. In case of snowfall, it must be able to accommodate the amount of snow falling in a day without it flying away. The water storage bottle should be a small-diameter container and should not be directly exposed to sunlight to reduce moisture evaporation losses. The cross-sectional area of the rainfall cup generally should be less than one-tenth of the rain collector area. The observation site where the rainfall gauge is installed should be chosen as far as possible in an open, flat area with no local terrain or objects affecting it, ensuring that when precipitation decreases diagonally, surrounding objects do not interfere with the normal entry of precipitation into the rainfall gauge. Generally, the distance between surrounding obstacles and the instrument should be at least twice the height difference between the top of the obstacle and the instrument mouth.

Daily rainfall refers to the volume of rain on a unit area (1 square meter) within 24 hours. Currently, common instruments used for measuring rainfall include rain gauges and measuring cups. The rain gauge typically has a diameter of 20 centimeters and contains a funnel and a bottle. The measuring cup has a diameter of 4 centimeters and is used in conjunction with the rain gauge. During measurement, the rain collected in the rain gauge is poured into the measuring cup, and the rainfall for that day can be determined based on the markings on the cup. If you do not have a rain gauge available, there is no need to worry—you can easily make one using common containers; the result will be quite good. Take a disposable plastic or paper bowl with a diameter of 20 centimeters (a suitable instant noodle paper bowl can be used), drill a small hole at the bottom slightly larger than a corn kernel, then place the bowl on an open-top container. Inside the container, there is a glass bottle whose mouth connects to the small hole at the bottom of the bowl. This creates a simple rain gauge. Once the simple rain gauge is ready, it can be placed 70 centimeters above the ground (the distance from the mouth of the gauge to the ground) to collect rainwater. After the rain stops, weigh the water in the bottle using a scale; 30 grams of water corresponds to 1 millimeter of rainfall.
