Introduction to the Recorder
... The recorder typically has only 8 holes, and by combining the different holes, one can obtain all semitones within two and a half octaves. Therefore, the recorder is a 12-equal temperament instrument, capable of playing any key within the 24 major and minor scales, and it's important to note the range of the instrument.
... The flute has a narrow range, a mellow tone, and is an important European woodwind instrument. It is also a standard solo instrument of the Baroque era. Due to its simplicity and ease of learning, it is now widely used in music education. The sound of the flute is warm, simple, and has a pastoral flavor, which can be interpreted in different roles in the orchestra. From joyful and cheerful to sad and heavy, the flute can easily take on the role. Modern performers have also tried new playing techniques and interpretations, giving birth to new musical sounds, which has given music lovers more choices and a broader perspective.
... The recorder is divided into the so-called "German recorder" and "Baroque recorder" due to the differences in finger techniques. The difference lies in the method of pressing the holes for certain notes, and accordingly, the size of the corresponding sound holes on the recorder is also different. The German technique is easier to operate in the early stages, and is widely used in music teaching in German and Chinese primary and secondary schools. However, the German technique is somewhat inconvenient for high notes, which is not conducive to playing works with higher difficulties. Therefore, generally, more professional playing methods still use the Baroque recorder.
Usage Method
◆Correct Playing Posture
Stand straight with your eyes level, relax your shoulders, and let them hang naturally. Place the flute mouthpiece in your mouth without going too deep, so that it doesn't touch your teeth. Keep your left hand on top and your right hand below, with your left thumb blocking the back hole of the flute – also known as the high-pitched or zero hole. The front of the flute has sound holes numbered 1 to 7 from top to bottom. Your left hand's second, third, and fourth fingers block the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd holes (be careful that your little finger naturally stays above the flute, not on the side, to avoid affecting the flexibility of your second, third, and fourth fingers), and your right thumb is placed on the side of the flute to stabilize it, with the rest of your fingers blocking the remaining sound holes in sequence. When blocking the sound holes of the flute with your fingers, it's important to use the palm of your fingers to block the holes for a tight seal, and to use the side of your thumb near the tip to close the hole, which is beneficial for opening and closing the high-pitched hole. The standard flute is quite simple, with only 8 sound holes, and through different combinations of blocking holes, you can get all semitones within two and a half octaves.
◆Basic Playing Techniques
Single spit is to use the tip of the tongue to press against the root of the upper teeth, gently blowing the tip of the tongue open with breath, and returning the tip of the tongue to its original position with elasticity after the sound is emitted. At this time, the tip of the tongue is like a ventilation valve. If we let it make a sound, it feels like making a "doo" sound. Only the first sound in the place with a connection uses the technique of single spit, and the sound of the tail of the "doo" sound is emitted after the sound, and the sound of the whole connection is like "doo woo".
◆Breathing and Ventilation Methods
When starting to learn the recorder, breathing should be considered a challenge. Inhale through the nose and the corners of the mouth, and breathe into the chest and waist. The abdomen should slightly contract inward to ensure that there is support for the breath when playing. To help students feel the use of breath, they can be divided into several groups and use contrast methods to help students feel the difference in playing with different breaths.
The sound of the flute is pure, clear, soft, and light, and it is known as the "soft flute" and the "flute that sings like a bird."
