Hooke's Law was discovered by Robert Hooke, an English physicist, in 1678. The process of Hooke's discovery is quite interesting. In 1676, he published a Latin riddle, which said: . Two years later, he revealed the answer, which was: , meaning "force changes as it stretches," which is the central content of Hooke's Law. In fact, 1500 years before Hooke, the Eastern Han Dynasty scholar and educator Zheng Xuan (127-200 AD) made an annotation for the sentence "measure its force, there are three cun" in the "Ma Ren" section of "Kao Gong Ji": "If the bow force is stronger than three stones, draw it to a length of three feet, and then release the string, as you add one stone, it stretches one foot." This correctly suggests that the relationship between force and shape change is proportional. Zheng Xuan's discovery predates Hooke by 1500 years. Therefore, some physicists believe that Hooke's Law should be called the "Zheng Xuan-Hooke Law."
