The outer shell of the inner ear labyrinth is hard and resembles ivory, known as the "osseous labyrinth". Inside the oseous labyrinth lies a "membranous labyrinth" that has a shape similar to it.

There is extraocular lymph fluid between the bone labyrinth and the membrane labyrinth. The membrane labyrinth contains endolymph fluid, which does not communicate directly with the external environment; therefore, the membrane labyrinth is a blind tube system.

The extravascular lymph fluid enters the subarachnoid space of the brain and communicates with human cerebrospinal fluid.

The membranous labyrinth is actually suspended in the extra-lymphatic cavity of the bony labyrinth, but it is fixed to the wall of the bony labyrinth by numerous fibrous bands.
