In a screw with a nut, the gasket's main function is to increase the contact area, reduce pressure, prevent looseness, and protect the parts and the screw.
Gaskets are mechanical seals between two objects, usually used to prevent pressure, corrosion, and the natural thermal expansion and contraction of piping from leaking between the two objects. Since mechanical processing surfaces cannot be perfect, using gaskets can fill irregularities.
A gasket is a thin plate (usually circular) with a hole (usually in the center) that is typically used to distribute loads in fasteners. Other uses include as spacing, spring (Bellville washers, wave washers), wear-resistant washers, pre-tensioning devices, and locking devices. The outer diameter of a gasket is typically about twice the inner diameter.
Gasket thickness is related to its form, material, diameter, seal face condition, and sealing medium. For most non-metallic sheet gaskets, thinner gaskets of 1.5mm or 2mm are usually used. This is because thinner gaskets have a smaller exposed area under internal pressure, leading to less leakage of the medium along the body, thus having a lower leakage rate, and the force pushing out the gasket is also smaller; thinner gaskets have lower creep relaxation; the thinner the gasket, the lower the price.
However, gaskets must fill irregular flange faces, and thicker gaskets have better compression properties, which have a certain degree of adaptability to damage or slight warping of the flange faces. Therefore, the thickness of the gasket depends on the roughness of the flange surface, the compression properties of the gasket, the stress of the gasket, the degree of deviation of the flange, and so on.
