伞，古称为“盖”。即遮阳挡雨之用具。

据《伞物纪原》载：“六韬曰：天雨不张盖幔，周初事也”。《太平御览》也引《通俗文》曰：“张帛避雨，谓之繖，盖即雨伞之用，三代已有也”。由此可见，古人初把伞叫作“盖”，由于是用丝帛制作而成，所以又称作“繖”。古时：“繖”与“伞”两字相通，到了唐朝，李廷寿所著《南史》和《北史》才正式为伞定名。此后就都用“伞”这个名称了。

伞在古代除了遮阳挡雨之外，还被列为达官显贵的装饰品和士大夫权势的象征物，俗称“罗伞”。帝王将相出巡时，长柄扇、“万民伞”左簇右拥，乘坐的车舆口张着伞，表示“荫庇百姓”。到了后魏时期，根据官位的不同“罗伞”的大小、颜色都有严格的区别。这种习惯一直传袭到了明朝。

我国是早发明伞的，据《史记》“舜以伞自杆”之说，伞在我国至少已有四千多年的历史了。但关于伞的来历却一直传说纷纭。一说：“春秋末年，巧匠鲁班之妻云氏为丈夫送饭，因不堪日洒雨淋，便巧手修竹，劈成细条，用丝相连，再将兽皮蒙于其上，这样便收扰如棍，张开如盖，虽称之为伞。二说：黄帝与蚩尤在涿鹿大战，黄帝的战车上有五彩云气象盖子一样笼罩，遮挡了敌人的水火烟毒，人们得到启发而发明了伞。另外还有：丽人游春，荷叶遮阳之说；樵夫行路，蒲叶挡雨之说等等。

纸伞是汉朝以后才出现的，唐时传入日本，十六世纪传入欧洲。意大利艺术大师达?芬奇受伞的启发设计了世界上个降落伞，十八世纪发明的伞齿轮，也是依照伞的截面形状而设计的。
