Measuring the alcohol content of liquor is usually done with an alcohol meter, also known as an alcohol hydrometer. An alcohol meter is made based on the principle that different alcohol concentrations have different specific gravities, which affect the volume of liquid the floating body displaces when it sinks into the liquid. When an alcohol meter is placed in the liquor, the higher the concentration of the liquor, the more the alcohol meter sinks and the smaller the specific gravity; conversely, the lower the concentration of the liquor, the less the alcohol meter sinks and the larger the specific gravity.
When measuring the concentration, pour some alcohol into the beaker, making sure not to overfill it. Look straight at the temperature and alcohol degree, and then look up the standard (alcohol degree at 20°C) through the 'Alcohol and Temperature Conversion Table'. When using an alcohol meter to measure the alcohol degree, it should be noted that due to the surface tension, there will be a crescent-shaped surface at the contact point between the alcohol surface and the long axis of the alcohol meter.
