Experiment Objective: Through game-based entertainment, children can learn more about scientific knowledge and their hands-on skills. They will understand the principle of levers.

 

Principle application: A simple scale that utilizes the lever principle to measure mass, specifically referring to torque balance. The rod scale is divided into two sections at various connections on the hand, and the fulcrum can be considered as the support point of the lever. Thus, when the two ends of the rod scale are balanced, the torque exerted by the weight on the rod and the torque exerted by the object on the plate are equal. Torque = force × distance of action. Since the weight of the fulcrum on the rod is known, the distances of force application at both ends (the vertical distances from the fulcrum to the fulcrum point and from the object to the fulcrum point) can be visually determined.

Experimental Cognition: Under the combined effect of force and resistance, a lever is in equilibrium when force × lever arm = resistance × resistance arm. In our daily lives, the principle of lever balance is applied in many places, such as trash cans and nail clippers. Throughout history, examples of people using the lever principle are abundant.

Knowledge Expansion: A certain scale can measure objects up to 5 kilograms. Is it possible to make minor modifications to the scale to increase its range?
