1. Low weight (i.e., weight below 20 pounds)
Advantages: The elasticity on any wire is excellent;
Disadvantages: The string tension is very loose, and the ball's direction control is poor. As long as it isn't hit in the sweet spot of the badminton racket, the way the ball flies will deviate slightly from the swing, making it impossible to precisely control the landing point. Even with the same force and the same ball, the landing position will always be different.
2. Low to medium pounds (i.e., weight range of 20–23)
Advantages: It feels very flexible when swinging the paddle, and ball control is also good;
Disadvantages: There is a feeling of stagnation. It is suitable for amateur players, as the stagnation makes it unsuitable for aggressive players.
3. Medium pound (i.e., the weight is between 23–25 pounds)
Advantages: At this weight, both the string and the stroke pattern can fully utilize their unique properties. Most amateur players use this weight, and elasticity begins to be felt when swinging the ball at this weight.
4. Medium to heavy pounds (i.e., weight range of 25-27 pounds)
Advantages: The retention of the ball on the racket surface is significantly reduced, with good ball control and precise shots.
Disadvantages: At this weight, it is noticeable that the ball surface is hard, the elasticity of the stitching decreases, and the swing lacks power.
5. High weight (i.e., weight above 28 pounds)
Advantages: Exceptional ball control, extremely precise hitting—as if the ball follows the path imagined mentally. This is the highest level of badminton playing. It requires strength (explosive power and wrist control), core strength, and body coordination. Not everyone can play at high power levels, but being able to do so at least indicates that one can play badminton, and experts make up the majority.
In any case, if you are a beginner, when choosing the weight of a badminton racket, you can start with lower weights, then move to medium weights, and finally to high weights, step by step. Do not immediately go to high weights, as beginners may easily suffer injuries to their wrists when using high weights. It is recommended to begin with lower and medium weights; a racket with a weight less than 20 pounds feels like the ball is completely out of control.
