Moxa fibers are soft, fine materials similar to cotton, obtained by repeatedly sun-drying, pounding, and crushing mugwort leaves, removing impurities and dust. They serve as raw material for making moxa sticks and are the primary material used in moxibustion therapy.
Made from dried leaves of mugwort, a plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It has a grayish-white color, is soft like velvet, flammable but does not produce flames, and has a fragrant smell, making it suitable for moxibustion. Depending on the processing level, there are different textures; the coarser ones are used for warming needles or making moxa sticks, while the finer ones are used for making moxa cones. The older ones are of better quality.
According to Li Shizhen's Compendium of Materia Medica, "When using mugwort leaves, aged ones must be used. They should be soft and fine, and are called mature mugwort; if using fresh mugwort, it can easily damage the muscles and veins during moxibustion." Therefore, aged mugwort fluff is preferred when selecting mugwort fluff. During moxibustion, mugwort fluff with a purity ratio below 10:1 is suitable for gentle moxibustion, while mugwort fluff with a purity ratio above 10:1 can be used for direct moxibustion.
