Soilless cultivation refers to a cultivation method in which plants are rooted in a medium such as water, peat, or decayed leaves from forests and vines, allowing the plant roots to directly contact the nutrient solution. The composition of the nutrient solution is easy to control and can be adjusted at any time. In places with suitable lighting and temperature but without soil, such as deserts, beaches, and deserted islands, soilless cultivation can be carried out as long as there is a certain amount of fresh water. Soilless cultivation is divided into various types according to the different cultivation media, including hydroponics, mist (air) cultivation, and substrate cultivation. Hydroponics refers to a cultivation method in which plant roots directly contact the nutrient solution without a substrate. The earliest hydroponics involves growing plant roots in nutrient solution, which can lead to anoxia, and in severe cases, root death. The commonly used hydroponics method is nutrient film technique, which involves a very thin layer of nutrient solution continuously circulating through the crop roots, ensuring continuous water and nutrient supply to the crop while also continuously supplying fresh oxygen to the roots.
