An umbrella, historically known as “gai”, is a device used to shield from the sun and rain.
According to "Annals of Umbrella History": "The Six Strategies states: 'When it rains, the canopy is not opened—this was common at the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty.' The Taiping Yulan also cites "Popular Literature" which says: 'Opening silk to avoid rain is called ‘mian’; this refers to the use of umbrellas, which existed since the Three Dynasties.' Thus, ancient people initially referred to umbrellas as “gai”. Since they were made of silk fabric, they were also called “mian”. In ancient times, the words “mian” and “umbrella” were interchangeable. It was not until the Tang Dynasty that Li Tingshou’s "History of the Southern Dynasties" and "History of the Northern Dynasties" officially named them umbrellas. Since then, the term “umbrella” has been used universally.
In ancient times, in addition to providing shade and protection from rain, umbrellas were also regarded as decorations for high-ranking officials and symbols of power among scholars and officials. They were commonly known as “luo umbrella”. When emperors and generals made public tours, long-handled fans and “mianmin umbrella” would be placed on either side, and the vehicles they rode in would have umbrellas open at the top to signify “protection for the people”. By the Later Wei period, there were strict differences in size and color of “luo umbrella” depending on the official position. This practice continued until the Ming Dynasty.
Our country was one of the first to invent umbrellas. According to the "Records of the Grand Historian," Shun used an umbrella as a pole, indicating that umbrellas have a history of at least four thousand years in our country. However, there are numerous legends regarding their origin. One theory states: "At the end of the Spring and Autumn period, Yun, the wife of the skilled craftsman Lu Ban, delivered food for her husband. Unable to endure the daily rain, she skillfully cut bamboo into thin strips, connected them with silk, and covered them with animal skin. This created something that could be held like a stick and opened up like a canopy—hence called an umbrella." Another theory claims: "During the battle between the Yellow Emperor and Chi You in Zhuolu, the Yellow Emperor's chariot was covered by a colorful cloud-like cover that protected it from enemy water, fire, and poison. People were inspired by this and invented umbrellas." Additionally, there are stories such as beautiful women using lotus leaves for shade during spring outings, and woodcutters using cattail leaves to protect themselves from rain.
Paper umbrellas appeared after the Han Dynasty. They were introduced to Japan during the Tang Dynasty and to Europe in the 16th century. The Italian art master Leonardo da Vinci was inspired by umbrellas when designing the world's first parachute. The umbrella gears invented in the 18th century were also designed based on the cross-section shape of umbrellas.
