The compass is an important tool, and its primary function is to orientate. When we learn about the principles of qi and reason, the first thing we need to learn is the basic method of using the compass to orientate. The compass is known as the Luo Jing, which was created during the era of Huang Di, and has been refined by predecessors from various dynasties. It is based on the principles of the I Ching and the Lo River and Luoshan, and takes into account the principles of the movement of the sun, moon, five planets, and celestial bodies. By observing the mountain ranges, rivers, plains, and undulating forms of the earth, it is refined and improved to determine directions and survey terrain. Most geomancers and sailors refer to it as the "compass" or "Luo Geng", rather than the "Luo Jing".
