Galvanized masonry mesh (usually referring to the galvanized steel wire mesh used in construction masonry, plastering, or insulation systems) has multiple advantages, primarily due to its base material and galvanizing process. The following explains the technical characteristics in combination.
Excellent corrosion resistance: The zinc coating is formed by a heat-dip zinc plating process to create a dense zinc protective layer, effectively isolating moisture and corrosive media; zinc's chemical activity is higher than that of iron, even if the coating is partially damaged, it can act as a sacrificial anode to corrode first, thus protecting the base material steel, significantly extending service life. For example, in simulated humid environments, the corrosion rate of zinc-coated mesh can be reduced by more than 90%, with the first appearance of rust spots reaching 8-10 years, significantly superior to uncoated materials.
Good mechanical properties and structural stability: Zinc-coated mesh made from low-carbon steel has high tensile strength and elongation, able to withstand cutting and local pressure during construction without loosening; its grid structure is strong overall, suitable for exterior wall insulation systems, and is less likely to deform during plastering or masonry, ensuring the flatness of the plastering layer and the bonding strength.
Environmental adaptability and durability: Galvanized layers can form a protective film of basic zinc carbonate in oxidizing environments, which possesses self-healing ability and is highly adaptable to temperature and humidity changes and mild friction. In scenarios such as water conservancy engineering or retaining walls, the service life can reach over 30 years, and the corrosion rate of the zinc layer is relatively low (about 33-100 grams per square meter per year).
Construction convenience and economy: Galvanized masonry mesh is typically supplied in the form of precast mesh panels, which can be directly fixed to the wall or insulation board during installation, simplifying the construction process and saving manpower and time. Its price is moderate to low, and the total life-cycle cost is also low. Although the initial investment may be higher than some materials (such as aluminum alloy), it is more economical in the long run due to its longer life and less maintenance requirements.
