It is said that roses originally only have green branches and leaves, without flowers. So why do they now bloom with such bright flowers? In the land of roses, there is also a touching story about this!
Long, long ago, there was a mountain peak with a clear spring at its summit. People called this spring "Golden Spring" and the mountain "Water Mountain".
There is a village at the foot of Shuishan Mountain. In the village, there are two lonely young men and women. The man is named Liu Lang. His parents died early on, leaving him only a firewood knife and a carrying pole, and he makes a living by gathering firewood. The woman’s name is Cui Ping. When her parents passed away, she was given only a herb picking shovel and a herb basket, and she earns a living by picking herbs. In the evening, both return with firewood and herbs. Their shared fate and life together lead them to respect, love, support, and help each other, forming a friendship that is taller than Shuishan Mountain and longer than Jinquan. Soon, they secretly decide to marry for life.
One day, Liu Lang was cutting wood in Dongshan, while Cui Ping was gathering herbs in Xishan. Feeling somewhat tired, Liu Lang fell asleep against a bundle of firewood. In his dream, he faintly smelled a floral scent. He quickly got up and followed the scent. As he walked, a crescent-shaped gate appeared ahead, with the words “Shuishan Imperial Garden” written on it. Liu Lang thought to himself, “I have cut wood here since I was young, visited all the caves and ridges on this mountain, and twenty-four slopes—but I never knew there was such a place. Let’s go in and see what beauty lies within.” When he pushed open the door, ah! It was a garden full of blooming flowers, and the wind blowing in was fragrant. Liu Lang had no idea that this was a garden on earth created by the Queen Mother of the West. Every May, when all flowers bloom, the Queen Mother brings her fairies to enjoy the scenery and admire the blossoms. While admiring, Liu Lang praised the beauty around him and eventually reached the center of the garden. There was a flower bed made of crystal bricks and stones, and the flower tree in the middle was especially charming—its red, fluffy blossoms resembled Cui Ping’s smiling face. It was a pity that only one such beautiful flower bloomed here. Liu Lang looked at the flower over and over, and suddenly remembered—this was a rose! There were roses all over Shuishan, but they never bloomed. How could the roses here bloom so beautifully? Right, I would pick this rose and put it on Cui Ping’s head—it would look great, and she would surely be happy. Just as Liu Lang was about to leave, two soldiers in armor, holding long spears, shouted and blocked his way: “Daring mortal, you dare pick the divine flower here!” Without further ado, they tightly tied Liu Lang up and wanted to take him away.
Moreover, Cui Ping, who had returned from gathering herbs in Xishan, found Liu Lang missing. She began searching all along the way, shouting, “Liu Lang — Liu Lang —” as she headed toward the mountain top. Suddenly, a voice of Liu Lang came from the cliff ahead: “Cui Ping, I am here.” Cui Ping looked up and saw Liu Lang with his hands tied, standing on the cliff, with two soldiers with raised eyebrows and crossed eyes behind him. Cui Ping ran over to Liu Lang, crying and shouting. The soldiers shouted loudly, saying, “He invaded the Imperial Garden of the Queen Mother without permission and dared to take the only rose flower in the world. He has committed a grave crime. I have been ordered to send him to lifelong hard labor.” Hearing this, Cui Ping cried desperately, “We can’t take him away. Give me back my Liu Lang.” The soldiers laughed slyly and said, “Your Liu Lang can only be restored if all the roses in Shuishan bloom.” Then they pointed their spears down the cliff, and with a thunderous boom and a bright flash of fire, Cui Ping collapsed unconscious on the cliff.
I don’t know how long passed, but Cuiping slowly woke up. Looking at the empty cliff top, she called out “Liu Lang” and then began to cry sadly. Cuiping is a kind and determined girl. She wants all the roses on the mountain to bloom, so that her beloved Liu Lang can return to her side. Whenever the sky was still full of stars, she would climb the mountain, carrying loads of golden spring water to water the roses, until the moonlight covered the water-covered mountains. Only then would she return. The stones on the mountain path wore away her feet, and the thorns on the slopes scratched her clothes. Her shiny sweat drops and red blood dripped across the mountain ridges and stone barriers. She kept watering, continuing until the tenth spring. That day, Cuiping decided to go up the mountain again to water the plants. When she opened the door, she saw that the whole mountain was covered with bright flowers—like strings of red agate, like flames. The roses had bloomed! Cuiping was overjoyed. She quickly picked a bunch of roses and shouted, “Liu Lang brother, oh, the roses have bloomed—!” Then she ran toward the eastern cliff. Just before reaching it, there was a thunderous sound, followed by a dazzling light. In the light, a figure fell from the cliff. Cuiping looked closely and saw her long-awaited Liu Lang back. She rushed into his arms. Liu Lang stroked the scars on Cuiping’s body and watched the blooming roses on the mountains. Tears, like broken pearls, fell onto Cuiping’s cheeks and onto the fresh rose petals.
From then on, the roses in Shuisan bloom with vibrant flowers every spring. Later, to remember these young people who worked hard for the blooming of the roses, Shuisan was named Cuiping Mountain, and the Golden Spring on the mountain became Liu Lang Spring. A pagoda was also built for them on the cliff. It is said that both Liu Lang and Cuiping ascended to heaven after their deaths, becoming flower deities in the sky and governing the thousands of plants and flowers on earth. Every year when the roses bloom, the couple returns to enjoy the view. At night, when everything is quiet, standing beneath the pagoda among the rose bushes, one can still hear them whispering secrets to each other!
