Soilless cultivation refers to a growing method where water, peat, forest leaf mold, vermiculite, or other media serve as the substrate for plant roots to stabilize the plants, allowing the root system to directly contact the nutrient solution. The components of the nutrient solution in soilless cultivation are easy to control and can be adjusted at any time. This method can be implemented in areas with suitable light and temperature conditions without soil, such as deserts, beaches, and islands, as long as there is a sufficient supply of fresh water. Depending on the medium used, soilless cultivation is divided into hydroponics, aeroponics, and substrate cultivation. Hydroponics involves direct contact between plant roots and the nutrient solution without using a substrate. The earliest form of hydroponics involved immersing plant roots in the nutrient solution for growth, which could lead to oxygen deficiency and, in severe cases, root death. The nutrient film technique is commonly used in hydroponics, where a thin layer of nutrient solution circulates continuously around the plant roots, ensuring continuous supply of water and nutrients while also providing fresh oxygen to the roots.
