【简介】
Netherlands is the main producer of hyacinths, and the cultivation of hyacinths was very popular in the 18th century. At that time, there were more than 2,000 recorded varieties. In 1596, Britain had already used hyacinths for garden cultivation. Since the 18th century, hyacinths have been widely cultivated in Europe and breeding has been carried out. So far, hyacinths have been widely cultivated all over the world, and the demand has been rising year by year.
Hyacinth is a perennial herbaceous plant. Its bulb is ovate with a membranous outer covering. The leaves are 4 to 8, narrow lanceolate, fleshy, with a concave groove, and they are green with a glossy appearance. The flower stalk is fleshy, slightly taller than the leaves, with a racemose inflorescence at the apex. There are 5 to 20 flowers, which are horizontally or downward-facing, funnel-shaped, with a long and expanded base, and lanceolate, rolled back lobes. The flowers come in colors such as purple, white, red, yellow, pink, and blue, as well as double-petaled, large-flowered, early-flowering, and polyploid varieties.
There are two ways to cultivate hyacinths: one is pot culture, choosing well-drained loose soil, applying sufficient base fertilizer, and planting the bulb into the pot in October. Each small pot should contain one bulb, and each large pot should contain 3-4 bulbs, then cover the soil. The planting depth should be 5-8 cm. After planting, it is necessary to maintain moist soil, and at the same time, attention should be paid to increasing the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. It will take about 120 days to bloom, and fertilization should be applied once before and after blooming. After the plant wilts in June, dig out the bulb, dry it, and store it in a room with a temperature not exceeding 28 ℃.
After hyacinths bloom, if the bulbs are well preserved, there is hope for them to bloom again the following year. However, because the bulbs have degenerated, even if they survive, the plants will become smaller and tend to wither. Therefore, it is not advisable to keep them for the next year. It is better to buy new bulbs for cultivation the following year.
The second method is to cultivate the plants in water (recommended), which involves placing the seedlings in a wide-mouthed glass bottle with a grid in December. The seedlings should only be submerged to the base of the ball. Then, place the bottle in a dark area and cover it with a black cloth. After about 20 days, the roots will begin to sprout in complete darkness. At this point, you can bring the plants outside to expose them to sunlight. Initially, you can expose them to sunlight for about an hour or two per day, and then gradually increase this to about 7-8 hours. If the weather remains stable, it is possible for the plants to bloom by the Spring Festival.
There are still many families who keep hyacinths in a special glass bottle shaped like a gourd. You can admire the flower cluster at the top, and you can see a thick bunch of white roots at the bottom. This scene of flowers and roots together, apart from orchids, is difficult to see in other flowers and plants.
The water culture method of hyacinth.
Put the bulb in a wide-mouth glass jar with a grid, add a little charcoal to help disinfect and preserve. The water should only be added to about 1-2 centimeters from the bottom of the bulb, making sure the bottom of the bulb does not come into contact with the water. Then place it in a dark place and cover the jar with a black cloth. After about 20 days, the roots will sprout in complete darkness. At this point, you can take it outside to expose it to sunlight. Initially, expose it to sunlight for about an hour or two a day, and then gradually increase to about 7-8 hours a day. If the weather remains relatively stable, it is possible to bloom within a month.
