  • Description

Matryoshka is a Russian specialty wooden toy, usually composed of multiple hollow wooden dolls with the same pattern, up to more than ten, typically cylindrical in shape, with a flat base that can stand upright. The most common pattern is a girl dressed in Russian national costume, called "Matryoshka," which has also become the generic term for this kind of doll.

The origin of the matryoshka doll is said to date back to a time when there were two neighboring families with relatives in Russia. The childhood companions of the two families, who were cousins, grew up together. Later, the cousin left for another town, and due to his yearning for his hometown cousin, he made wooden dolls every year, with each year's doll being larger than the last. After several years, when he saw his cousin again, he gave her a row of wooden dolls to express his longing. This tradition was later imitated and became known as the matryoshka doll, also known as the auspicious doll. Another story suggests that in olden times in Russian rural areas, the names Matryona and Matriosha were very common among women. Scholars point out that these names contain the Latin root "mater," which means mother. Hearing these names, people easily associate them with the image of a strong and capable Russian woman from a large peasant family, often a plump woman who has given birth to many children. Since the chubby wooden dolls have so many little dolls inside them, the matryoshka (matryoshka) naturally became the name for the finely carved and brightly colored wooden dolls.

The earliest concept of Russian dolls was to create wooden dolls to please children, as children love fairy tales. Therefore, famous characters and animals from the stories were turned into dolls. Over time, the dolls developed a unique style, with different-sized dolls stacked one on top of another, making them even more interesting. Since the 14th century, the dolls originating from the Russian ancient town of Zagorsk, 70 kilometers south of Moscow, have been loved by children and adults from all over the world due to the exquisite carving and painting skills of generations of craftsmen and the accumulation of Russian national culture. Gradually, the materials for dolls have become richer, including historical figures, powerful politicians, and even people and events around us in daily life. According to the number of small dolls contained in the belly, dolls are divided into sets of 5, 7, 12, 15, and so on.

The production process of Russian dolls is very meticulous, and the preparation of wood alone takes a considerable amount of time. Lemur and birch are ideal woods for making dolls, and the trees are usually felled in early spring, when the trees are rich in sap. The bark is peeled off, leaving only a few rings of bark to prevent the wood from cracking, and then it is exposed to the air to ventilate. If you want to make medium-sized dolls, they need to dry for two years, and if you want to make 15 sets of dolls, the inner walls of each doll need to be very thin, and the requirements for the wood are higher. Generally, it takes 5 to 6 years to dry. After the process of shoe making, hot flower, inlaying gold, etc., each doll goes through 15 processes. The size is not measured with tools, but determined by the artists' sense and experience. Their unique handcrafted designs make the dolls unique.

So far, matryoshka dolls remain very popular, and people who have the opportunity to visit Russia often buy a set to bring home. Because matryoshka dolls are not only good companions for children but also unique works of art with a Russian flair.

Matryoshka dolls, with a strong regional style, are a unique type of handmade craft unique to Russia. The material for the dolls is mainly linden wood, so there may be wood knots in some places, but they do not affect the beauty. The dolls can be used as ornaments, to store jewelry, miscellaneous items, candy, etc., and can also be used as gift boxes.

Matryoshka -- a gift that everyone deserves. It is a beautiful gift that carries family love, witnesses love, and expresses yearning for a foreign culture.
