Orff teaching method
Orff Music Teaching Method" was created by German musician Carl Orff (1895 - 1982). This is a music education system. It gives music education a brand new, anti-traditional concept and method, and has had a profound impact on music education in many countries and regions. Reflecting on the current situation of music education in our country, we are still using the outdated model of singing and teaching music theory knowledge as the main body, ignoring the emotional stimulation and experience of students in music, and ignoring the subjectivity, initiative, personality, and creativity of students in music learning. By seriously studying Orff's musical education ideas and system, we will gain many beneficial insights.
Starting from the essence and origin of music, that is, 'appealing to the senses and returning to humanity'—this is the fundamental concept of Orff's music education. This is fundamentally different from our original understanding of the essence and purpose of music education.
Orff believed that the expression of thoughts and emotions is a natural instinctual desire of humans, and it is naturally revealed through forms such as language, singing (including instrumental performance), and dance, as has been the case since ancient times. This is an inherent ability of human beings. The primary task of music education is to continuously inspire and enhance this innate expressive power, and the quality of the performance is not the goal to be pursued. However, our traditional understanding of music education is not like this. Our curriculum has always treated learning singing, music theory, and related musical skills and abilities as means and goals of aesthetic education, with our focus on how to learn well.
In fact, the instinctive singing, playing, and dancing of students in music learning is not very difficult and can even show a certain level. This is because the instinctive singing, playing, and dancing conform to human nature. In this process, students do not have the psychological burden of worrying about "not being able to learn" and being scolded or losing face, so they will all get various degrees of satisfaction. This natural expression also helps to stimulate the emergence of creativity in students' improvisation. Due to the emergence and encouragement of this creativity, it has created a state where students learn various music skills and abilities. In this teaching process, the teacher is inevitably the guide, inducer, and participant in the students' learning. Pleasure and learning art complement each other. This is one of the important characteristics of Orff's teaching method.
